Memorial Day Weekend 2016

For the first time, I spent Memorial Day weekend this year in the most meaningful way. I must be really getting old since my travels have become increasingly purposeful and deep. I flew to Texas to attend my cousin’s graduation ceremony in Lubbock, we then drove to Corpus Christi for eight hours to see the USS Lexington Museum on the Bay. I’ve pretty much been all over Texas except its Gulf Coast so I was pretty stoked to venture out that way. Plus, I’m a sucker for history and the Blue Ghost (USS Lexington’s nickname) has more than enough.

It was a little disheartening to see this important landmark not getting the attention it rightly deserves. It relies heavily on donations, sponsors and tourism businesses but I notice how it was not packed at all. I guess everybody headed to the parks and beaches for Memorial Day. I fear for the day that significant museums like this will close down due to lack of funding and lack of visitors.

So let us support our troops and remember those who gave their lives for our country by also supporting important museums like the  USS Lexington Museum on the Bay.
